Abilities in Cosmic Odyssey are divided into physical, mental and social. Under each category there are 4, so in total there are 12 abilities.
Abilities are used to adjust dice rolls, calculations, bonuses for skills, weapons, magic and so on.
To ensure that a character is playable, all rolls below 20 are modified according to the following table. Scores below 20 are only used for animal, monsters and so on.
To make sure that a character can look heroic, 3 rolls can be adjusted. This can be done in 2 ways. In most cases, using adjustment instead of a reroll is the best choice.
You can re-roll your character from scratch if the dice gods have not been on your side at all. However, we recommend that you accept that 95+ is quite rare and that it is healthy and fun to have weaknesses.
You might not have any stats above 90 to begin with, but as you level, your ability scores will increase. This will happen fast in the beginning and then slowly even out. However, we do allow re-rolls if you have rolled something that would not be much fun to play.
In total, you have 2 re-rolls.
Houserules: If a character is really bad (below 700 total in ability stats or just not at all what the player wants), you can re-roll the character for free.
Ability bonuses improve your effectiveness in combat, skills, magic, and tech. Each ability adds modifiers to actions and checks where that attribute is a key factor for success.
Choosing your class in Cosmic Odyssey starts with your ability rolls, which highlight your natural strengths and weaknesses. High scores in certain abilities can point toward classes that excel in physical combat, magic, or technology, while balanced or versatile rolls open the door to hybrid options.
Once you know what your rolls suggest, you should also consider what you’re drawn to play - whether that’s a brawny frontline fighter, a cunning tech specialist, a disciplined caster, or a blend of roles. Your class will shape your early combat style, determine which skills and categories you can access first, and guide your first steps in the universe. As you gain experience, you can branch out, making your starting class less of a restriction and more of a launchpad for your character’s evolution.
Choosing your profession begins after your class is set, focusing on your character’s role, affiliations, and the world they operate in. Your profession connects you to factions, orders, guilds, or institutions, granting bonuses to certain categories and shaping your starting opportunities. Under each class, you will also find suggested professions that could work well with the class. However, you are free to choose and create the character you want.
Look at your ability rolls, class, and the style of play you enjoy - professions can reinforce your strengths or fill gaps in your skill set. They also set the tone for how your character interacts with the world, what resources and allies they can call upon, and what obligations or rivalries they might face. More complex professions can demand a lot from the player, requiring higher engagement, record-keeping, and active participation to make the most of their potential.
Over time, your profession remains a key part of your character’s identity in the setting, even as your skills broaden and your story unfolds.
