Calm, guide, train, or influence the behavior of animals, from mounts to wild creatures—whether through empathy, discipline, or instinct.
Roll d100 + Animal Handling vs. DR 100
On success, you can:
- Calm a distressed animal
- Train or teach simple behaviors
- Direct a bonded animal to assist in tasks or combat
- Discern intent or predict upcoming behavior
Long-term handling can reduce DRs for future rolls or improve animal loyalty (-10 DR per successful roll).
–20 DR for trained, domesticated animals in calm environments
+20 to +40 DR if the animal is panicked, wounded, aggressive, or has been mistreated
+30 to +50 DR to calm apex predators or war beasts mid-attack
Calm a panicked horse during a starship evacuation DR = 100 + 20 (panic) → 120
Roll = 125 → The animal is steadied and will follow commands
Prevent a mutated predator from charging your group: DR = 140 (wild, aggressive, apex)
Roll = 135 → You fail to calm it—it attacks
Animal Handling encompasses the practical and emotional skill required to interact with animals effectively. It includes understanding body language, anticipating behavior, and forming bonds based on trust, repetition, or necessity.
You can train mounts, direct companion creatures in battle, or prevent disaster through timely soothing gestures. In hostile environments, this skill becomes crucial not only for safety but for maintaining mobility and tactical flexibility through animal allies. The difference between a trusted mount and a fleeing beast can define the outcome of a mission.
