Bio-Modification

Short Description

Continuously refine and enhance the biology of your allies over time. Grants one teammate per level-up a smoother stat progression by softening natural ability growth limits.

Success Criteria

Roll 1d100 against DR 100 + 5 per level of the target over 1. (Level 1 =100, level 2 = 105 etc.)

For each +15 success rate, the target can shift 1 extra dice.

Effects

Once per level, each member of the group is allowed to shift 1 ability stat roll to use the dice roll for the current stat interval that is lower than the actual stat interval. Thus, if the stat is between 71-80, which would normally mean that 1d6 would be used, the 1d8 from the 61-70 interval is used instead.

Only 1 stat is allowed and the bio-modification check must be made for all targets.

Modifiers and Restrictions

–10 DR — Advanced lab available

-10 DR - 1 day per level is spend in the process

+20 DR — Modification must be done in survival conditions or under duress

+20 DR - Target or bio-modificator has not been with each other most of the time since last modification

No other modifiers should be made available.

Action Examples

At level-up, a teammate with 92 in Strength (normally 1d2) rolls 1d3 for their strength increase instead, thanks to your bio-monitoring support.

Long Description

Bio-Modification, when practiced consistently over time, allows a skilled specialist to guide the natural development of their allies’ bodies. Through routine monitoring, subtle tissue stimulation, hormonal tuning, and micro-adaptations, the bio-modificator ensures that each team member grows in balance with their physiology—softening genetic barriers and unlocking latent potential.

This long-term intervention manifests at level-up: once per level, the bio-modificator may help a teammate bypass the limitations of their current ability stat interval by allowing them to roll from the improved dice range just below.

How to use this page

All the information above is intended as a guide to help you navigate the many situations that can arise during your game. Since it's both impossible—and frankly uninspiring—to plan for every possible outcome, players are encouraged to think creatively when using their skills. Game Masters, in turn, are encouraged to embrace and support that creativity.

Whenever possible, aim to resolve situations through narrative choices, logical thinking and role playing. If that’s not feasible, agree on a Difficulty Rating (DR) using the provided Success Criteria and Modifiers. These are not rigid rules, but suggestions - starting points to help you find the right level of challenge. The player describes their intended action, and the Game Master proposes a DR. This should be open to brief discussion at the table, ideally resulting in consensus. If not, the Game Master has the final say.

It’s important to emphasize that all suggested effects, modifiers, and action examples are exactly that: suggestions. If you’re unsure how to resolve something, they offer a reliable fallback—but wherever possible, we encourage you to push boundaries. That’s where some of the most memorable and exciting moments in play are born.

Sequencing and Potential Counters are far from exhaustive. With hundreds of skills, spells, and tech modules in the game, the possibilities are too vast to list. You’re encouraged to explore combinations that make sense in your story and setting and in the situations that arise in your game. Sequencing and countering are core to Cosmic Odyssey - they’re where strategic depth meets dramatic flair, and where legendary moments often take shape. Even if no sequencing and counters are mentioned, some certainly exists and can be smartly utilized.

So explore boldly, improvise wisely, and enjoy the game as it unfolds around your choices.
