Recognize Spell Category

Short Description

Identify the magical category of a spell, caster, creature, or item to make informed tactical or defensive decisions.

Success Criteria

Roll 1d100 against Difficulty Rating 100.

Can often end in an opposed roll if it is being obscured by skills which spell is being cast.

Effects

Success: You correctly identify the spell category in use. Per +15 success rate, you gain a +5 bonus to skills that identify spells.

Failure: You misidentify or fail to gather enough information, possibly giving the wrong tactical advice.

Modifiers and Restrictions

-20 to DR if spell or category is known and caster/item is familiar

+20 to DR for unfamiliar spells, categories and items

+40 to DR if the magic is exotic/alien

Action Examples

You see a cloaked enemy raising their hands, conjuring purple energy. You roll 112 against a DR 100 identifying the category as Void Manipulation.

A relic pulses with unknown energy. You roll 125 against DR 120 (rare item, unfamiliar magic (could also be DR 140)). You succeed with +5 and recognize it as Chronology magic, but can't predict the exact effect.

Long Description

This skill allows you to observe a spell, caster, monster, or magical item and deduce which spell category is involved. While it does not reveal the exact spell, it provides vital tactical information such as whether the magic is offensive or defensive, physical or mental, instantaneous or lingering.

Recognizing the spell category helps in choosing the right countermeasure—such as Suppress Magic for elemental spells or Steelmind for charm/illusion. This knowledge can also inform team strategy, such as positioning to avoid likely area effects or choosing defensive actions appropriate to that category.

Sequencing

Not optimized for direct sequencing but good for optimizing follow up actions.

Potential Counters

No direct counters, but the use of skills like Spell Feint and Phantom Casting can make this skill harder to use.

How to use this page

All the information above is intended as a guide to help you navigate the many situations that can arise during your game. Since it's both impossible—and frankly uninspiring—to plan for every possible outcome, players are encouraged to think creatively when using their skills. Game Masters, in turn, are encouraged to embrace and support that creativity.

Whenever possible, aim to resolve situations through narrative choices, logical thinking and role playing. If that’s not feasible, agree on a Difficulty Rating (DR) using the provided Success Criteria and Modifiers. These are not rigid rules, but suggestions - starting points to help you find the right level of challenge. The player describes their intended action, and the Game Master proposes a DR. This should be open to brief discussion at the table, ideally resulting in consensus. If not, the Game Master has the final say.

It’s important to emphasize that all suggested effects, modifiers, and action examples are exactly that: suggestions. If you’re unsure how to resolve something, they offer a reliable fallback—but wherever possible, we encourage you to push boundaries. That’s where some of the most memorable and exciting moments in play are born.

Sequencing and Potential Counters are far from exhaustive. With hundreds of skills, spells, and tech modules in the game, the possibilities are too vast to list. You’re encouraged to explore combinations that make sense in your story and setting and in the situations that arise in your game. Sequencing and countering are core to Cosmic Odyssey - they’re where strategic depth meets dramatic flair, and where legendary moments often take shape. Even if no sequencing and counters are mentioned, some certainly exists and can be smartly utilized.

So explore boldly, improvise wisely, and enjoy the game as it unfolds around your choices.
