Sense Motive

Empathy
Intuition
Reasoning

Short Description

Interpret another person’s intentions, emotions, or hidden agenda - even when they attempt to mask it.

Success Criteria

Roll 1d100 + Sense Motive bonus vs DR 100 + modifiers

Opposed Roll vs:

Bluff, Deception, Persuasion, Diplomatic Pressure, Social Engineering, Glibness etc.

Effects

On success, you recognize that the person is:

- Hiding something

- Motivated by fear, greed, guilt, etc.

- Acting under external pressure

- Pushing a specific agenda

- Mentally influenced (including magical)

You don’t necessarily learn the truth, but you do learn that something is off and potentially what their emotional driver is.

Modifiers and Restrictions

–20 DR if the speaker is emotional, poorly prepared, or untrained

–10 DR if the speaker is nervous, rushing, or contradicts themselves

+10 DR if they are calm, well-practiced, or socially adept

+20 to +40 DR if they are trained manipulators, politicians, spies, or acting under magical/mental influence

+15 DR if attempting to evaluate someone you don’t know or can't see clearly

–10 DR if you’ve spent significant time observing the individual beforehand

Action Examples

A merchant seems evasive when discussing their supplier:

DR = 100 – 10 (nervous) = 90Roll = 104 → Success → You suspect the goods are stolen

Long Description

Sense Motive is a subtle but vital skill in social interaction. It allows a character to pierce through surface-level appearances and evaluate deeper truths behind words, actions, or tone.

Used successfully, it can expose traitors, spot deceit in negotiations, reveal mental tampering, or determine whether someone is genuinely aligned with your cause—or just pretending.

This skill is crucial for anyone operating in diplomatic, covert, or high-stakes situations where trust is dangerous and motives aren’t always clear. It’s often paired with Insight, but while Insight reads emotions, Sense Motive dives into intent.

Sequencing

- Insight – Combine emotional reading with motive interpretation

- Lie Detection – Add confirmation to your suspicions

- Storytelling / Bluff – Create a contrast you can evaluate

- Public Speaking – Evaluate the real purpose of a speech

- Magic Lore / Detect Pressure – Suspect when motives are magically influenced

Potential Counters

- Bluff / Deception / Glibness – Act with confidence and charm

- Diplomatic Pressure – Redirect focus and apply subtle influence

- Manipulate Perception – Shape how your actions are seen

How to use this page

All the information above is intended as a guide to help you navigate the many situations that can arise during your game. Since it's both impossible—and frankly uninspiring—to plan for every possible outcome, players are encouraged to think creatively when using their skills. Game Masters, in turn, are encouraged to embrace and support that creativity.

Whenever possible, aim to resolve situations through narrative choices, logical thinking and role playing. If that’s not feasible, agree on a Difficulty Rating (DR) using the provided Success Criteria and Modifiers. These are not rigid rules, but suggestions - starting points to help you find the right level of challenge. The player describes their intended action, and the Game Master proposes a DR. This should be open to brief discussion at the table, ideally resulting in consensus. If not, the Game Master has the final say.

It’s important to emphasize that all suggested effects, modifiers, and action examples are exactly that: suggestions. If you’re unsure how to resolve something, they offer a reliable fallback—but wherever possible, we encourage you to push boundaries. That’s where some of the most memorable and exciting moments in play are born.

Sequencing and Potential Counters are far from exhaustive. With hundreds of skills, spells, and tech modules in the game, the possibilities are too vast to list. You’re encouraged to explore combinations that make sense in your story and setting and in the situations that arise in your game. Sequencing and countering are core to Cosmic Odyssey - they’re where strategic depth meets dramatic flair, and where legendary moments often take shape. Even if no sequencing and counters are mentioned, some certainly exists and can be smartly utilized.

So explore boldly, improvise wisely, and enjoy the game as it unfolds around your choices.
