Versatile Strike

Agility
Quickness
Presence

Short Description

Fluidly change your combat stance mid-attack to adapt to the flow of battle, seamlessly shifting between offensive and defensive approaches.

Success Criteria

Sequenced with an attack, you use your Versatile Strike skill instead of the attack roll.

Effects

You switch stance with your attack allowing you to for example attack offensively and then go directly into defensive stance against any reactions and further attacks:

If switching to defensive stance, the stance change takes effect after the attack

If switching to offensive stance, the stance change takes effect during the attack

Modifiers and Restrictions

Standard combat modifiers apply.

Action Examples

Shift Into Defense After Attack: You slash with a sword from offensive stance and transition into a defensive guard.→ Versatile Strike Skill: 55, Roll: 55 +20 offensive stance → Total = 130 → Attack uses 130 as attack roll→ After the attack resolves, you enter defensive stance wiith the +20 bonus to Defensive Bonus and -20 penalty to attack rolls.

Long Description

Versatile Strike allows a melee combatant to flow between offensive and defensive postures without sacrificing tempo. Rather than taking time to manually switch stances, this skill enables a stance shift within the attack itself—executing a hit while already adapting to the next phase of combat.
The trade-off is that your attack is resolved using your Versatile Strike roll, which may be lower than your regular AB-based attack roll. However, the tactical benefit of changing stances in the same action can decisively shape the battle.

Used effectively, this skill allows players to play mind games—switching from cautious duelist to relentless striker in an instant, or baiting opponents into overcommitting only to turtle up post-strike.

Sequencing

Sequence with defensive stance to optimize your defensive move.

Potential Counters

Counters usually used against attacks for improved defensive bonus.

How to use this page

All the information above is intended as a guide to help you navigate the many situations that can arise during your game. Since it's both impossible—and frankly uninspiring—to plan for every possible outcome, players are encouraged to think creatively when using their skills. Game Masters, in turn, are encouraged to embrace and support that creativity.

Whenever possible, aim to resolve situations through narrative choices, logical thinking and role playing. If that’s not feasible, agree on a Difficulty Rating (DR) using the provided Success Criteria and Modifiers. These are not rigid rules, but suggestions - starting points to help you find the right level of challenge. The player describes their intended action, and the Game Master proposes a DR. This should be open to brief discussion at the table, ideally resulting in consensus. If not, the Game Master has the final say.

It’s important to emphasize that all suggested effects, modifiers, and action examples are exactly that: suggestions. If you’re unsure how to resolve something, they offer a reliable fallback—but wherever possible, we encourage you to push boundaries. That’s where some of the most memorable and exciting moments in play are born.

Sequencing and Potential Counters are far from exhaustive. With hundreds of skills, spells, and tech modules in the game, the possibilities are too vast to list. You’re encouraged to explore combinations that make sense in your story and setting and in the situations that arise in your game. Sequencing and countering are core to Cosmic Odyssey - they’re where strategic depth meets dramatic flair, and where legendary moments often take shape. Even if no sequencing and counters are mentioned, some certainly exists and can be smartly utilized.

So explore boldly, improvise wisely, and enjoy the game as it unfolds around your choices.
