Control unfamiliar, complex, or industrial machines - and identify how to safely activate or interact with technological systems with locomotion.
Roll d100 + Operate Machine skill vs. DR 100
On success, you take control of the machine and operate it effectively for its intended purpose.
+20 DR for alien, experimental, or very complex machines
+20 DR to operating a machine in combat or under severe duress
–10 DR if the machine is commonly used within your field or culture
In the depths of a mine you come across a heavy drilling machine. You manage to turn on the engine and attempt to drill through the floor and deeper into the ground. With no prior experience with mining you roll against DR 100 to succeed.
Just outside of the moon camp you find a four-legged, spiderlike machine that seems to be able to walk the low-gravity moon surface. In order to successfully manage the alien craft you have to roll against a DR 120.
Operate Machine is the hands-on skill for using heavy, non-standard or unfamiliar technology. While it often applies to large-scale systems like industrial drills, gates, consoles, or bulldozers, it also covers interacting with unfamiliar mechanical systems — determining how they function, how to use them safely, and how to get them working under pressure.
Whether flipping the right switches on an alien generator, engaging an automated turret, or figuring out how to activate a field emitter, this skill helps you bridge the gap between knowing what a device is and actually using it. It’s often paired with Repair Machine or Computer Science when more than physical control is required.
Not optimized for sequencing. Using engineering skills to analyse the machinery in front of your may purvey bonuses.
