The Metro: The Bajàn (Thunder Worm)

Description

The old military tunnels have been rebuilt into a city metro.

The pride of Louktu’s engineering, The Thunderworm is a marvel of Akkadian ingenuity and human industry. Its sleek, steel cars emit a low, rhythmic pulse, like a heartbeat, as it glides along the tracks, its headlights cutting through the gloom.

  • Design: The train’s exterior is a mix of riveted steel and reinforced glass, allowing passengers to glimpse the flickering tunnel walls as they speed by. The front car is shaped like a serpent’s head, a nod to the Goulli Guild’s emblem, and its "eyes" are twin arcs of blue electricity.
  • Speed and Power: Capable of reaching terrifying speeds in the long, straight stretches beneath the sea, The Thunderworm is both a lifeline and a danger. Its brakes scream like a banshee when engaged, and the sparks from its overhead power line illuminate the tunnels in strobing flashes.
  • Cargo and Passengers: The train’s cars are divided between passenger compartments (often crowded with dockworkers, merchants, and the occasional Akkadian diplomat).
  • The Conductor: A no-nonsense Marduk engineer usually mans the controls, but the train itself seems almost alive—some say it has a mind of its own, especially during storms when the power surges.
History

Dangers of the Undercroft

  • Stowaways and Smugglers: The metro is a favorite route for thieves and spies. The party might witness a midnight handoff or stumble upon a smuggling operation in progress.
  • The Echoes: Those who ride The Thunderworm at night sometimes hear whispers in the dark—voices of the dead, or something older, calling from the depths.
  • The Legion’s Legacy: Some say the tunnels are haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who never left, or worse, that something was left behind in the dark.
